Summer Language Workshop

Funding

The Workshop offers several scholarships and fellowships, with opportunities varying by language, course, and eligibility.

How Workshop funding works

The Workshop offers scholarships and fellowships. Funding is not automatic. You must apply for it.

Workshop funding is available only to learners attending both sessions. Single-session applicants are not eligible for Workshop funding.

Funding applications are accepted until the Priority Deadline, (usually in early December). Every language page will list the next deadline at the top of the page.

To apply for funding, complete an application for admission. If, based on the information in your application, you are eligible for a Workshop funding program, and if the funding application deadline has not passed, IU will email you a funding application.

Funding sources change from year to year. Below is an overview of recent funding sources. Details will be in your funding application.

Outside Funding

You may be able to use funding from your home institution to attend the Workshop. Because your home institution controls these awards, confirm its requirements and approval process directly with the office providing your funding.

Employers, government agencies, military programs, and other organizations may pay some or all of your Workshop costs. If another organization will pay IU directly, begin arranging payment early so that authorization is in place before your bill is due.

In some cases, you may be able to combine Workshop funding with support from another source. Tell the Workshop about other funding you receive; the amount or type of one award may affect another.

Women Engaging Globally

Founded with an award from the Indiana University Women's Philanthropy Leadership Council in 2018, the Women Engaging Globally scholarship provides partial tuition for undergraduate women preparing for international careers.

Hamilton Lugar School Scholarship

Funded through donations from alumni and supporters of the Workshop, the Hamilton Lugar Scholarship provides partial tuition. Any participant in the Workshop may apply.

National Language Flagship Program

The Language Workshop does not administer Flagship scholarships, but its Arabic, Chinese, and Russian programs are approved Flagship summer options.

If you are a Flagship student, ask your local Flagship team about scholarships to fund your summer intensive study.
