Living-Learning Center

Step into a globally minded community as you step onto campus.

Your education follows you home

The Living-Learning Center is where your global education extends beyond the classroom and into the way you live. You’ll be on the fourth floor of Spruce Hall, alongside other students who are studying the world.

Through the year you’ll learn from and network with the prominent guests and faculty who come through the school, take part in discussions of critical international issues, host culture nights that celebrate traditions from across the floor, and join excursions that connect what you’re studying to the places around you.

Exclusive programs and events

  • Career Readiness Courses — designed to help you find your place at IU and figure out what comes next, these courses give you practical tools for navigating college and launching your career.
  • Global Current Events Series — go deeper on what’s happening in the world right now. Campus experts lead conversations that put today’s headlines in broader context.
  • Cultures and Languages Series — cook, craft, and pick up phrases in languages you’ve never encountered, led by regional specialists, linguists and language teachers. It’s one of the most fun ways to build cultural fluency you’ll find anywhere on campus.
  • Global Careers Series — government, industry, nonprofits, international organizations. This series pulls back the curtain on what careers in global fields actually look like, and what it takes to get there.

Leadership and mentorship

  • Student Leadership — want to shape the community you live in? Join the Student Leadership Advisory Board or apply for the Peer Mentorship Program, two ways to build leadership skills while making the LLC your own.
  • Mentorship Network — faculty members and Peer Mentors are here to help you find your footing, connecting you to resources across the LLC, Hamilton Lugar and IU from day one.
Any incoming undergraduate can apply, whatever your major. Preference goes to Hamilton Lugar students, but the floor is open to everyone. Applications go through IU Housing — choose the Hamilton Lugar School LLC on your housing application and complete the supplemental LLC application.
In the fall you’ll take a one-credit LLC seminar with our director on observing culture through the senses. In the spring you’ll choose from a set of LLC courses. Every resident also takes a three-credit Hamilton Lugar course in both the fall and the spring.

Living in Spruce Hall

Spruce opened in 2013, which makes it one of the newer halls on campus, and it sits back in the trees on the southeast side. Most of its 442 beds belong to first-year students. Rooms are either singles with their own bathroom or doubles.

There is more shared space than the size of the building suggests: two kitchenettes, a recreation room, music practice rooms, a computer lab and printers. Forest Quad dining is across the street, two more dining halls are a few minutes away, and the Global and International Studies Building is about ten minutes on foot.
